Database of toxic cyanobacterial blooms in Greek freshwater bodies
Publication: 19-07-2022
Last revision: 19-07-2022
Description
In the framework of Action 2.1 "Data from aquatic (marine and terrestrial) ecosystems related to climate change", the Photo-Catalytic Processes and Environmental Chemistry group of the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology of the National Centre for Scientific Research "Demokritos", focused on the study of the history of harmful algal blooms in aquatic ecosystems of Greece.
One of the effects of climate change is the more frequent occurrence of harmful algal blooms in surface waters, which are mainly favored by the global warming, the eutrophication and the changing hydrological conditions. Cyanotoxins released into water by toxic cyanobacteria pose a significant risk to aquatic ecosystems, drinking water reservoirs and public health.
One of the objectives of the Action was to develop a database of toxic cyanobacterial blooms in aquatic ecosystems in Greece. The database is organized as an interactive map and is available - freely accessible online at the link: https://view.genial.ly/6225f55318a7240018289e77/interactive-image-copy-habs-greece
The database contains for each lake data referring to the date that the cyanobacterial bloom was observed, the dominant cyanobacterial species, the presence of cyanotoxins and their concentration levels, the analytical technique used for the determination of cyanotoxins and the relevant reference.
